The No-Needle Experience: Modern Cataract Anaesthesia

Ms. Menassa
2 min read

For many people, the biggest anxiety about eye surgery isn't the procedure itself—it's the fear of needles near their eye. If this sounds familiar, you'll be relieved to know that modern cataract surgery typically requires no injections at all.

At Menassa Vision, Ms. Menassa routinely performs cataract surgery using topical anaesthesia—anaesthetic eye drops that completely numb the eye surface. There are no needles, no injections around the eye, and no anaesthetic injected behind the eye.

Here's what actually happens: before your surgery, anaesthetic drops are applied to your eye several times. Within minutes, the eye surface is completely numb. You'll be able to see light and colours during the procedure, but you won't feel any pain.

Most patients describe the sensation as gentle pressure and colourful lights—many find it almost meditative. The procedure typically takes just 15-20 minutes, and before you know it, you're in the recovery area with a cup of tea.

The topical anaesthesia approach has multiple benefits beyond avoiding needles. Recovery is faster because there's no bruising from injections. You can see immediately after surgery—there's no patch covering your eye. And the anaesthetic wears off gently over an hour or two.

For patients who feel particularly anxious, light sedation can be provided by an anaesthetist. This keeps you relaxed and calm while remaining awake—you won't remember much about the procedure afterwards, but you'll be responsive throughout.

Ms. Menassa's calm, reassuring manner and clear communication help even the most nervous patients feel at ease. She explains each step as it happens, so you always know what's occurring. Many patients tell us the anticipation was far worse than the reality.

If needle anxiety has been holding you back from addressing your cataracts, please know that modern techniques have made this fear obsolete. We're here to guide you through the process with patience and understanding.
